Does Sachin deserve the Bharat Ratna?

Before I start this post,I will mention this:I AM NOT A SACHIN BASHER..He is the greatest batsman of his era( my view). And I, albeit a bit late, would like to congratulate him for his double ton against South Africa.

The voice among the people (especially politicians) is increasing that Sachin Tendulkar be conferred the Bharat Ratna. Well, on one hand if you consider the people who have been receiving the highest civilian awards of late( Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan-Padma Shri, Sant Singh Chatwal-Padma Bhushan), I think it would be fair to give Sachin Tendulkar nothing less than Bharat Ratna. But then again there have been many great players of this game before him from our country (Sunil Gavaskar for example). Also there have been many great sportsmen before Sachin. The greatest name I can think of is Dhyan Chand, considered by many as the best hockey player till date. Dhyan Chand received the third highest civilian honour (the Padma Bhushan) though if his exploits were taken into account like Sachin's, he would have been awarded Bharat Ratna (at least posthumously).

Cricket is a game that is very popular(in fact a craze) in India. But the game is not a game that is played in every country of the world unlike soccer/football. Also it is foolhardy on the part of the people to call Sachin as the greatest batsman of the game ever because eras can never be compared. And to call for him to be given the honour after one innings of 200 in a one day international is even more foolhardy. Sachin is yet to score a triple century in Test cricket or score the highest score in it. And even if Sachin does accomplish those feats I would not recommend him to be given Bharat Ratna. Yes, if after retirement he can show some more accomplishments, I would raise my voice that he be given the highest Indian sporting achievement award ever, the Dhyan Chand Award. But Bharat Ratna,no. I don't think he has done anything for Indian Cricket that he deserves to be given the Country's highest civilian award.

I know most of Sachin's die hard fans will contradict me. But I stand by what I write.

you are an arsehole... thats all i can comment on this post...
lets consider the people u admire...
aishwarya- got the looks, exposed her booty
saif - took 15 yrs to learn the basics of acting
chatwal - in fraud case
gavaskar - not evn near sachin's accomplishment
SACHIN- he is undoubtedly the GOD of cricket and made Cricket a religion in INDIA, and emotions of thousands of hearts is connected with his bat and he is perfect role model for any kid.

You are absolutely correct. In my opinion Sachin is not even the greatest Indian batsman (the honor goes to Gavaskar). He is not the greatest player of his generation (that honor goes to Ricky Ponting with his 3 world cup trophies). Many who are very crazy about Sachin are people who have not seen Gavaskar play or those who indulge in hero worship without paying attention to winning or being a clutch player.

@toton :Please do not write stupidly.Read my post properly, you half literate fool. I never said I approved Sant Singh Chatwal,Aishwarya and Saif getting Padma awards, but that if they do get it,Sachin deserves nothing less than the Bharat Ratna.
@Hari: I agree with you mate, on some things you have written but still Sachin is the greatest batman I have seen play. I have not seen Gavaskar much I admit. But can all our older folks be completely wrong to say that he was a great batsman?

'Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award, awarded for the highest degrees of national service. This service includes artistic, literary, and scientific achievements, as well as "recognition of public service of the highest order."'
Has it ever been given to a sportsperson before? No.
There is a difference in the literal meaning of Bharat Ratna and the award itself. Sachin is undoubtedly the biggest sport icon that India has produced as of yet. There is no doubt he is a jewel in India's crown. But if you want to argue about the merits and demerits of presenting him with a medal and put his name down in the record books as a recipient of Bharat Ratna, personally I find the the effort unnecessary. Either way his name will go down as India's 'Ratna'. I don't care if he gets the award or not. And it wouldn't be far fetched of me to assume that neither does Sachin.

yes, he hasn't done anything for cricket.

ofcourse we can't take, his contribution in making cricket popular in non cricket playing countries because people just loved watching him play.

ofcourse we can't take, his contribution of becoming a role model to the country's youth and showing them that with hard work we can achieve anything.

ofcourse we can't take, his contribution of playing the next day after his dad's death, he din forget that he is on national duty.

ofcouse we can't take, his contribution of raising his voice against thackrey's when he felt something wrong is happening.

ofcourse we can't take, his contribution of uniting the country and spreading smile when he is on the pitch.

leave out this era, in no other era's of Indian sports there came a player with such a magic that he can unite the whole nation for some moment.

But hey who give a damn to all those things hai na ?
